YouTube’s official spec
- Resolution: 1280 × 720 px (16:9 aspect).
- Minimum width: 640 px.
- File size: under 2 MB.
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 (any other ratio is letterboxed).
Does DPI matter?
No — YouTube ignores the DPI tag. The platform displays by pixel count. If your design app forces a DPI choice on export, set 72 DPI for the smallest file metadata.
Workflow that consistently looks sharp
- Design at 1920×1080 (2× the spec) for editing headroom.
- Down-sample to 1280×720 with the Image Resizer.
- Export JPG quality 85–95 or PNG-24.
- Compress with JPG Compressor if needed to stay under 2 MB.
Design tips that move CTR
- Big, readable text — 4–6 words max.
- Strong colour contrast against YouTube’s white/dark themes.
- Faces with clear emotion test well in A/B trials.
- Keep the right edge clear — the duration timestamp overlays there.
